The Barry county road commission along with Kent, Ionia, Montcalm & Muskegon county road commissions and the city of Kentwood and Walker will be lifting spring weight restrictions at 6 a.m. on Wednesday April 15th. Thank you all for your cooperation at helping us maintain our county road system.
In recent weeks and upcoming weeks we have and will be placing gravel over locations that have received chloride (dust control). A couple of things to remember….
1. The new gravel has the correct amount of binder material mixed in therefore it controls dust very well on its own.
2. Everyone wants dust control applied in the last couple of weeks in May
3. Our gravel spreading season begins in April or May and we aren’t able to complete that work until September or October, therefore if we stopped placing gravel for a couple of months to enjoy the dust control we wouldn’t be able to complete our gravel spreading applications.
Please realize we have thought this over for years to determine the best and most economical way to spend your tax dollars and this is a bit of a necessary evil.
Our crews will be out in full force at 4 am tomorrow, 1/6/15.
As temperatures fall salt becomes less effective at melting snow and ice. Below 15 degrees salt has little to no melting ability. The next time you place salt on your driveway, try mixing the salt with a course grain sand. This helps spread your salt reserve further and the sand grit gives some amount of traction on the frozen ice until temps allow for the salt to work its magic. That’s what we do on your roads!!!
Our snow plowing crews have been out on the roadways both Saturday and Sunday and will begin again at 4 am tomorrow, Monday 1/5/15. Please drive with caution as it appears winter weather has set in. Happy New Year!!!
